Pianist & Composer Mika Pohjola Visits Berklee College of Music


Finnish-American pianist and composer Mika Pohjola will give a two-day seminar at Berklee College of Music in Boston on Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28. As a part of the seminar he will perform his compositions with bassist Fernando Huergo and drummer Bertram Lehmann at Recital Hall 1W on Friday, February 28 at 2 pm. Huergo and Lehmann are faculty members at Berklee and former study mates with Pohjola from the 1990's. Pohjola additionally played in Huergo's jazz and chacarera quintet for ten years, from 2002 to 2012.

Pohjola's career spans over twenty years as pianist, arranger, composer and record producer. He is a graduate from Berklee and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, and was based in New York City from 1995 until 2012. He is currently enrolled at the Royal College of Music with Jazz Composition as his major. He also teaches in Stockholm.

Pohjola has released more than thirty albums under his own name. The most recent album, Trio Hour features his New York trio, Dan Loomis on bass and Kyle Struve on drums. This 2013 outing was raved by the online jazz magazine, All About Jazz, in a September 2013 review: "...presents him with a chance to stand up and be counted as one of the most gifted jazz pianists of his generation."
